Hello Coyote Family!

It is my joy to serve the students, parents, and staff at Cheri Cox Elementary as your school counselor! I have been in education for 28 years.  I am also known as Mrs. Firefly because I like to brighten the lives of students.  (and Segrest is difficult to say and remember in kindergarten)  I have a Bachelor's degree in Deaf Education and a Bachelor's degree in English.  I also have a Master's degree in Education.  I have lifetime certifications to teach K-8th grades, English Language Learners, and School Counseling. 

I have been married for 25 years to my high school sweetheart, who is a pastor here in Wylie. We have two children, Rook, age 22, and Molly, age 18.

My heart's desire is to see the students at Cheri Cox Elementary succeed in all areas of their lives. I value the teamwork between home and school. I know that to see a student shine we must work hand in hand to ensure their success. 

The growth of the "whole" child is extremely important to me here at Cox. I value and know the impact of teaching social and emotional skills to students. I will visit the computer classrooms every 9 weeks to teach lessons that focus on brain science, mindfulness, empathy, kindness, compassion, respect, grit, and friendship skills. These lessons will reinforce the SEL lessons being taught by your child's teacher. I continually partner with teachers and parents to help meet the needs of students. I meet with small groups of students or meet with them individually depending on what needs they have. The "Mind-Up" curriculum is one of the resources used to teach students about mindfulness and the brain. I also use Counselor Keri's grade leveled character guidance lessons.  All of these lessons are available for you to explore in my office if you have questions. I  use the Second Step Curriculum for Child Safety lessons.  I will update the Cox Newsletter weekly to show what topics are being discussed as whole group guidance lessons and include some parenting tips.
